Grade 3-5

Students in the third through fifth grade classroom will be studying the following curriculum areas this year:

Christ Light

We are studying the Old Testament this year. All our lessons include an application to our daily lives and are reinforced by Memory Treasures (Bible passages and the hymns and liturgy of our Lutheran heritage.)

Social Studies

This year 3rd graders will review the subject of Communities. We will explore Citizenship, Government, Geography, American Culture, Past and Present Communities, and People Working in a Community. 4th Graders will dive into the History and Geography of the Regions in the United States (The Northeast, South, Middle West, West). We will also spend some time discussing Government. Together, we will participate in the following Units: Map Skills, Thanksgiving, and Australia.

Science

We will study Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space and Technology. We will enjoy a two-unit study of the Rainforest.

Reading

We will read a variety of genres such as biography, realistic fiction, and folktales. We will read novels. We will learn about and use reading skills such as identifying main idea and details, summarizing, and paraphrasing. We will analyze character, plot, and author’s purpose.

English

In grammar, we will cover the parts of speech, writing conventions, and sentence diagramming.
In writing, we will study and practice the writer’s craft, as well as the steps of writing as we compose authentic pieces of writing.

Spelling

We will categorize word according to word families such as: short vowels, long vowels, compound words, homophones VCCV and VCV patterns.

Math

We will review and expand on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills. We will practice reading and explaining story problems. We will also learn about time, measurement, and be introduced to algebra and geometry.

Music

We will be introduced to elements of music and singing such as tone and pitch, study musical terms, and identify musical instruments through the use of engaging songs. We will also practice for church singing opportunities.

Art

We will use the principles of art and use a variety of media to produce art that aligns with the CLAL art fair guidelines.

Physical Education

We will participate in Presidential Physical Fitness, play group games, and train for soccer, basketball, and track.
